Bahamian Media News:

The Minister of Education and Technical and Vocational Training and Member of Parliament for Englerston made her contribution to the 2023/24 budget debate in the House of Assembly on Thursday.

During her presentation, the Hon. Glenys Hanna-Martin addressed the issue of student learning loss due to the COVID-19 pandemic. She disclosed the findings of testing conducted by Renaissance Learning Inc. She said, “the findings of this testing are the cause for significant concern and reveal that the greatest need for urgent intervention is in New Providence, Grand Bahama, Abaco and Eleuthera. The testing is telling us that on average 44% of our student need urgent intervention according to the data reported. The final results of these national findings will be discussed with all relevant stakeholders in the ensuing weeks.”

According to the Minister the student intervention needed to rectify learning loss will involve summer programs, early morning classes, remediation at home and the help of NGOs (non government organizations). She stressed that this is not a small task. She also disclosed that many students were not tested and that efforts were underway to determine the reason.
