The Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) concluded its 67th Annual Health Research Conference on Saturday, April 29, 2023 at Atlantis Resort, Paradise Island. Nearly three hundred delegates from across the Caribbean, Canada, Fiji, Netherlands, United Kingdom and the United States participated in this year’s return to a fully face to face three-day conference.
The long-standing annual health research conference is a vital platform for health professionals to share their research findings and discuss public health successes and challenges facing our region. The scientific, evidence based research findings shared at this year’s conference will assist countries in making informed decisions about programs, practices and policies that promote health and wellness across a multi-sectoral level.
The conference featured prominent speakers and poster presentations that covered topics such as emerging infectious diseases, non-communicable diseases, climate change, mental health, health systems strengthening and tourism and health.
Dr. Joy St. John, Executive Director of CARPHA, expressed her contentment with the quality of expert presentations, discussions and delegate representation, and an overall well executed conference based on the theme: “Caribbean Health and Tourism: Pathways to Recovery and Resilience”. She also thanked Atlantis and by extension The Bahamas for the “amazing” hospitality.
Professor Minerva Thame, Dean of Faculty of Medicine and Chair of the Conference Research Advisory Committee, commended the predecessors who had the foresight to start this conference to share research findings. She also encouraged the young researchers to continue to share their ideas and engage in research practices with a mentor so that the aim of the conference can continue for generations to come.
Representing the conference’s host country, The Bahamas, The Hon. Dr. Michael R. Darville, Minister of Health & Wellness, also shared his delight with the level of engagement at this year’s conference that afforded healthcare practitioners in the Caribbean and beyond to
discuss their critical research and to be unified in the way forward to address issues that impact us all.
The CARPHA Annual Health Research Conference continues to be an essential platform for health professionals to share their research findings, collaborate, network and strengthen regional and international partnerships. CARPHA anticipates another successful conference
next year.
