Improving Student Mental Health

Bahamian Media News:

The Ministry of Education and Technical and Vocational Training’s School Psychology Unit recently assessed the mental health of approximately thirty students

The findings of the assessment were shared by School Psychologist, Antoinette Lewis-Deveaux. She said, “I could be coming from a home, from a dysfunctional home, and then I have so much things on my plate that I have to deal with as a student and yes, students do deal with that, and then I have to come to school. So I have to shift from being an adult to a student and I don’t know how to make those changes or I’m dealing with relationship issues. Because of the exposure we have a lot of young people don’t know how to handle relationships. Our sexuality that’s a big thing. And so I’m coming from a Christian home that speaks against it but I don’t know how to cope because I’m feeling this way and so society is telling me one way, my home environment is telling me one way, my friends are telling me something else, and so I’m battling all of these things.”

The assessment also found that students were struggling with depression, stress and anxiety.
