Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Hon. Fred Mitchell warned Bahamians against overstaying their time in the United States while delivering his contribution to the 2024-2025 budget debate in the House Of Assembly last Wednesday.
Mitchell said overstaying time can impact Bahamians seeking US Visas. “As I understand their current law, if you overstay that is a permanent bar to your getting a visa to go to the United States again. So people ought to be very warned. Miami is only thirty minutes away if the time is running out jump on the plane and come home. Do not stay in these people’s country over the time your supposed to be there and then rush to a minister of the government and expect us, all out of breath, to resolve that problem. It’s not a problem that can be easily resolved,” he said.
A 2022 document released by the United States Department of Homeland Security reports that the rate of overstay for Bahamians admitted to the United States business or pleasure via air and sea is less than 5%.
