Hurricane Beryl Evacuation Flight

Bahamian Media News:

A special Bahamasair flight transporting Bahamian residents and students from Jamaica arrived in the capital on Tuesday evening. The Government authorized the flight to evacuate people from the island which was in the direct path of Hurricane Beryl, a category 4 storm.

Bahamasair Chair, Tanya Pratt spoke with ZNS News about the quick organization of the flight. She thanked Bahamas Consul General In Jamaica, Alveta Knight “who was on the ground in Jamaica from very early this morning mobilizing our students and not only our students. If you would note other persons came on the flight as well. Initially we were going to send the 50 seater but we decided to send the jet and so anyone who wanted to come was allowed to come.”

Also at the airport on Tuesday to meet those who chose to take the special flight were Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Hon. Fred Mitchell, Minister of Labour and the Public Service, the Hon. Pia Glover-Rolle and Minister of Education and Technical and Vocational Training, the Hon. Glenys Hanna Martin.

Minister Glover-Rolle said, “as a parent I understand how the parents on this side also felt. But it was important that we responded to it.”
