Energy Reform Addressed At PLP Branch Meeting

Bahamian Media News:

Minister of Transport and Energy, the Hon. Jobeth Coleby-Davis addressed the government’s energy sector reform plans at a recent meeting of the New Providence Women’s Branch of the Progressive Liberal Party.

The Minister explained the current operating model at Bahamas Power and Light to the gathering. She said, “we have all these millions going out the door and really and truly our utility company is not reaping any real benefit. All they have done has now turned a contingency plan into an operating plan. So what should be contingency if you have a system failure that you really have to address quickly, you call someone who may be able to bring some rental support, you bring it and you say we gotta get this engine up. We’re gonna need about 2-3 months so we’re gonna need you to put that system online for us and give us this 2-3 month support so you give us that window. The 2-3 months of contingency where you lean on rental generation, just for a short term period has now become the full scale operating agreement.”

Coleby-Davis announced a 25 year deal between the government and the Pike Corporation for the transmission and distribution of electricity in June.
