PM On Crime

Bahamian Media News:

Prime Minister, the Hon. Philip Davis was asked about the crime situation in the country on Tuesday after three men were shot and killed on Monday in the Fox Hill area.

Mr. Davis said, “it is very troubling and the time has come for us to find ways and means to reset the minds of our young people.”

The Prime Minister also spoke on the issue of the number of young men on bail after it was mentioned by Commissioner of Police, Clayton Fernander who spoke with reporters at the scene of Monday’s triple homicide.

“These trials are taking more than two and three months so if you have 170 trials that’s outstanding what does that mean.  How many months…that’s almost ten years to clean it up so we are looking at initiatives to try to respond to the fact that trials are not happening quick enough and the courts are overwhelmed,” Mr. Davis said.

The government has passed legislation giving the option of bench trials and the added more judges to the bench.  The Prime Minister said, “we’ve done some things to try to reign in the time and period but again change takes time to take root and though those changes are in place its taking a bit of time to take root.  But we think at the end of the day we will beat this scourge.”

The government has begun the implementation of Clear, Build. Hold, which was announced earlier this month by Prime Minister Davis.
