Government officials are in Grand Bahama this week attending Diplomatic Week events hosted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Several of them have addressed the body of diplomats on various topics and issues including climate change and investments.
During his presentation Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Hon. Fred Mitchell said, “the number one policy issue for The Bahamas is climate change. We must get to work in an open and transparent way to address climate change. Its existential for us. With 80% of our land mass within a meter of the sea and with sea levels rising. Here on Grand Bahama the highest point on this island is 48 feet above sea level. So we’re headed to COP29 to continue to make the case.”
Minister for Grand Bahama, the Hon. Ginger Moxey also spoke to the issue of climate change. She said, “on the climate front, we are recovering and rebuilding after the devastation caused by Hurricane Dorian and in the area of trade and culture we are revolutionizing as the gateway to the Caribbean through the creative industry, orange economy. And thanks to the great work of the Hon. Philip Edward Brave Davis and his team Grand Bahama is on the move.”
The nation’s chief executive told the body of diplomats that The Bahamas seeks “a world in which each nation’s voice is a note in a global symphony where equity guides trade, where justice leads climate action and where the needs of the many eclipses the ambitions of the few.”
