Akhepran International Academy (AIA) welcomed national athlete Allan Mortimer to the fold as its head coach at the beginning of the new school year, September, 2024.
Since then, AIA students are already showing their athletic prowess and even winning medals. Coach Mortimer is pinpointing natural talent and honing the students skills in various sports, in order to set the foundation for what will become a robust school programme.
Most recently, AIA students scored three first place and two second place medals at the Bahamas Scholastics Athletic Association (BSAA) Cross Country Meet at Goodmans Bay on Saturday, October 25, 2024.
Coach Mortimer was ecstatic about the students’ performance: “We had a small team of just ten athletes; yet, they won five medals. There were three schools and four clubs participating in this meet. Some teams had up to thirty members compared to our ten.”
Winning their divisions were Ma’at Wright in the under 11 girls; John Metellus in the under 13 boys; and Gabrielle Williams in the under 13 girls. Securing second place finishes were Nefer Wright in the under 17 boys and Zacharias Bullard in the under 13 boys category.
Coach Mortimer is also working on building strong basketball and volleyball teams for the school. He is a four-time Carifta Games Gold medalist in the triple jump. He is the National Junior record holder, and is a two-time Junior Pan Am Games Silver Medalist. In addition, he is a two-time Junior CAC gold medalist in the triple jump, and he participated in two World Junior Championships, placing 7th and 4th.
He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education from Norfolk State University, and a Masters Degree in Sports Management from the University of Arkansas. Mortimer is also a certified dietitian, personal trainer, and strength and conditioning coach.
