Minister of National Security, the Hon. Wayne Munroe spoke with ZNS News about the government’s approach to fighting crime over the weekend.
He said, “the policy that you have to be steadfast with is the five pillar approach prevention, policing, prosecution, punishment and rehabilitation. Currently, the police are running Clear, Hold, Build strategy in Englerston first and it will move on. We have to always examine what happens in terms of why it happens. And so we’ve had a number of gang and retaliation killings. We’ve had a number of killings where people just can’t control themselves and anger management is the issue, get in an argument and a result. Over the last week it would appear that these two murders may have some relationship to mentally challenged persons and so rather than be emotional and out of sorts we have to look at why something happens because to get justice for somebody it doesn’t just involve punishing the perpetrator. It involves evaluating what has happened so that we can take steps to try and stop it happening again and in that way you would honor somebody’s life if you get to understand how it comes to pass.”
The Minister was also asked about the need for capital punishment as a deterrent to crime. “It always been in our law that’s a matter for the court. What I would say to persons is if you’re calling for it because you think that’s a silver bullet, it comes and you don’t have to do anything, you’re sadly mistaken. Whether the court orders somebody to be executed or not you will still have your obligation to seek, to engage, to prevent it happening ever again. So there is no silver bullet. Capital punishment will not relieve you of your obligation to make a difference.”
The murder country in the country is now 111 after a 72 year old woman was raped and murdered over the weekend.
