International Men’s Day Symposium

Bahamian Media News:

The Men’s Desk, Department of Gender & Family Affairs launched its inaugural International Men’s Day Symposium on Tuesday, November 19, 2024.

Head of the Men’s Desk, Bishop Chadwick L. James is hopeful that men and young boys all over the country will be inspired to pursue their dreams and reach greatness. This, he said, would result in a positive impact on our country, eventually reversing social ills faced by men today.

The Men’s Desk supports non-governmental organisations and other groups focused on empowering men. Through a series of events, the Desk reaches out to those who are in direct contact with the men who need help the most.

On Tuesday, Bishop James opened the symposium by giving a charge to the participants, which included a large contingent of the uniformed forces, to start charity at home. He said if they invest in self love and care, they would have more to give to their families and the nation. James advised them to put God first as it would provide a strong compass for their lives.

Minister of Social Services, Information and Broadcasting, Hon. Myles LaRoda, said his ministry is implementing a series of initiatives to uplift men: “Our vision for The Bahamas is to bring men together to provide the support and encouragement needed to achieve their fullest potential. We are laying the foundation for a comprehensive framework, a network of organisations committed to the holistic growth and empowerment of all males.”

“To that man that may be searching for direction, we stand with you. Our goal is to reach men in the workforce, elderly men who still have wisdom to share, and boys in our schools. We want to create spaces for boys and men to become agents of change. We want to make sure that no man is left behind.”

The International Men’s Day Symposium involved a series of speakers including Assistant Commissioner of Police Damian J. Robinson; Dr H Shyann Williams, Bahamas Department of Corrections; Commander Delvonne Duncombe, Royal Bahamas Defence Force; and Chadwick James II, MBA. The event was held from 9am to 4pm at the Paul H Farquharson Center.
