The Bahamas Customs and Excise Department has recorded its highest revenue generating year in 2024 beating last year’s record.
Customs Comptroller, Ralph Munroe spoke with ZNS News about this latest accomplishment. He said, “our record would have reflected that for any one single month we would have collected $116 million. That happened last year in the fourth quarter and that is the calendar year. This year we have surpassed that figure by some $20 million and the record would reflect where we’ve collected for the month of November $136.8 million that has never been heard of in the history of this country.”
According to the Comptroller the monthly revenue collected is approximately $110 million with the largest generators being customs import duties and excise.
Munroe also spoke about the new technology employed by the customs department. He said, “like anything else it’s a challenge because its electronic and a lot of people are not electronically savvy. And then of course when we’re dealing with electronic technology you’ve got all the glitch and the system at certain times be overloaded…sometimes you find that internet is down, WhatsApp is not functioning properly and any number of glitches can happen.”
Munroe says Bahamians can rest assured that revenue laws will be carried out and can expect efficient and courteous service from customs officers.
