Several shanty towns or unregulated communities were demolished this year as the government focused on removing such communities in the country.
Ministry of Works and Family Island Affairs Buildings Control Officer, Craig Delancy gave an update on the demolition project. He said, “for the year we’ve demolished almost 500 unregulated structures in New Providence, Eleuthera and Abaco. Under the Buildings Regulations Act we are able to give them a notice for 28 days, a pull down notice. Within that 28 days if they remove the structures themselves then that notice becomes void. However, many of the residents don’t do that and so its up to the Minister to decide when he wants to continue with the demolition.”
Delancy also spoke about the budget and time challenges they have experienced. “A lot of them feel that we’re not going to do anything and eventually we get around to it. And so we’ll like to caution or warn other persons in unregulated areas to start preparing now to find other regulated housing to live in because we’re going to continue the process in 2025.”
