President of the Bahamas Union of Teachers (BUT), Belinda Wilson gave her reaction to the industrial action called for by the Bahamas Trade Union Congress led by Obie Ferguson on Monday. Wilson spoke with reporters outside of Bahamas Faith Ministries where a seminar was being held for Guidance Counselors.
She said, “today the members of the Bahamas Union of Teachers from Grand Bahama to Inagua, they reported to school as usual, at 8:45 am until 3:15pm.”
The BUT President further stated about that industrial action, “when we examine the concerns of Customs and Immigration, when we examine the concerns of the Junior Doctors and the Nurses, when we examine their concerns, their concerns mirror the concerns that the Bahamas Union of Teachers have, the Bahamas Public Services Union have and other affiliates have. So we know of the fight. We support a stance but we always look deeper when its been led by Obie Ferguson.”
Wilson was against Ferguson signing a memorandum of understanding with the Progressive Liberal Party while in opposition in 2021. She is of the opinion that Ferguson and his affiliates were sold a bill of goods. “I stand by what I said. Mr. Ferguson, your bowl of porridge is cold. So now you’re crying and you’re using workers to push your own personal agenda. Stop it.”
Wilson said it is not her character to attack another trade union leader but expressed that it is time for Ferguson to move on.
