Local Concern Following US Withdrawal From Paris Agreement

Bahamian Media News:

President Donald Trump has signed an executive order withdrawing the United States from the Paris Agreement.  The agreement is a treaty addressing the impacts of climate change agreed to by most countries in the world at COP 21.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Hon. Fred Mitchell spoke with ZNS News about The Bahamas’ position on the issue after the US withdrawal.  He said, “we will continue to work with like minded individuals and countries on this matter.  Within the domestic theatre of the United States, again, that’s their province, whatever they decide to do.  But the science is real and we’ll simply continue working and we are certain in the longer term, that in the best interest of our country, we’ll protect our country on the issue of climate change.”

A change in the immigration policy of the United States was also signed off by President Trump. Minister Mitchell assured that The Bahamas will defend its interests should this move cause an influx of immigrants trying to get to the United States through The Bahamas.

Mitchell also said that the relationship between The Bahamas and United States remains unchanged.
