US Representative for California’s 43rd Congressional District, Congresswoman Maxine Waters appeared on The Rundown talk show on this week following the second inauguration of Donald Trump as President of the United States.
During the interview Waters gave her take on the impact of the immigration policy of the new Trump administration on Caribbean countries. Waters comments were centered around Haitian immigrants. She said, “the attempt for some to want to return those to Haiti who are there for temporary status. And of course our policies are such that if in fact their lives are in danger, if there’s certain kind of violence that’s going on that we should recognize that. And so in recognizing that and talking about what we should do there are those of us who feel that we should continue the temporary status of those who’ve been able to leave areas like Haiti where we know that so much violence is going on.”
During the transition period, the President elect Trump proposed that Caribbean countries including The Bahamas and the Turks And Caicos Islands receive immigrants deported from the United States whether or not it was their home country. Prime Minister, the Hon. Philip Davis rejected the proposal in early December 2024.
