UB Legal Week Opening

Bahamian Media News:

Prime Minister, the Hon. Philip Davis was the keynote speaker at the opening of  legal week at the University of The Bahamas on Monday.

Mr. Davis told the legal professionals of opportunities that will become available as the government implements its policy initiatives.  He said, “locally as we implement cannabis reforms, update our digital assets and merchant exchange framework and address long standing legacy issues like land reform there are huge opportunities to change our nation for the better that will rely on the expertise of our best and brightest legal minds.”

The Prime Minister also spoke about the autonomy granted to the Judiciary through the Court Services Act.  “By ensuring judicial autonomy we were able to modernize the efficiency of our judicial system.  We look forward to seeing the next generation of lawyers working alongside the council members to uphold the legislation.  Meanwhile in areas like financial services we have huge opportunities in FINTEC and emerging markets in Asia as well as the United Kingdom market where tax changes have opened the door for potential expansion to our shores.  We must cultivate the necessary expertise in trust and estate law, wealth management and tax law to take advantage of these opportunities.”

Legal week is hosted by the law society of the University of The Bahamas.
