Dealing With Serial Sexual Offenders

Bahamian Media News:

Serial sex offender Sidney Cooper has been arrested for allegedly committing indecent assault against a 68 year old woman in a convenience store on January 25th.

Cooper was released from the Bahamas Department of Correctional Services in 2023.  At the time Minister of National Security,  the Hon. Wayne Munroe warned the public that Cooper would be re-entering society and provided the general area where he would be staying.

In response to questions about Cooper on Wednesday the national security minister outlined plans to address the release of offenders.  He said, “we are currently in the final stages of the consultation on the Conditional Release Of Offenders Act and a provision of the act that I am advocating strongly for is an ability for a Supreme Court judge on sentencing you if he is satisfied that you pose a particular danger because of your offence and the nature of you offending to be able to order you to be supervised for up to twenty years after you are released and that supervision could include electronic monitoring.  To me that would be a much more powerful protection to the public then the current regimes that you have for sexual offenders registers when you simply notify the public, where you get to know where the offender is living.

Cooper pleaded not guilty to this latest offence before Magistrate Carolyn Vogt-Evans.  He was denied bail and remanded to the Bahamas Department of Correctional Services.  He is expected back in court in February.
