Minister Sweeting delivers proclamation declaring March, ‘Local Government Month’

Bahamian Media News:

The Prime Minister and Minister of Finance the Hon. Philip Davis proclaimed the month of March will be observed as ‘Local Government Month’. The Minister of Works and Family Island Affairs the Hon. Clay Sweeting read the Proclamation at the Ministry on Monday, March 10, 2025.

Following the reading, the Family Island Affairs Minister noted that this year is the 29th Anniversary of Local Government in The Bahamas.

“This milestone signifies nearly three decades of progress in Local Governance. As we mark Local Government Month, we honor the essential role it plays in fostering an effective and inclusive system of governance across our nation.”

He said, “In 1996, The Bahamas took a groundbreaking step by enacting the Local Government Act to bring governance closer to the people.

“This transformative legislation established Local Government Districts, Councils, and Town Committees, empowering our Family Islands with enhanced autonomy to manage their affairs.”

The Minister explained that by decentralizing administrative functions, the Act ensured that decisions affecting local communities were entrusted to those who intimately understand their unique needs, challenges, and aspirations.

“Local Government stands as the cornerstone of our democracy, amplifying the voices of our communities and championing their causes. By decentralizing authority, we have created a system of active civic engagement where citizens play a vital role in shaping decisions that directly impact their lives.”

He said the contributions of Local Councils are far-reaching. “They oversee critical services such as public health, sanitation, and infrastructure maintenance, while driving initiatives that stimulate economic growth, create job opportunities, and enhance the quality of life in Family Island communities.”

The Minister explained that projects like bus stop shelters, boat ramps in fishing communities, playgrounds, recreational ground upkeep, and public bathroom facilities demonstrate the invaluable work of Local Councils in addressing community needs.

“Over the past 29 years, Local Government in The Bahamas has achieved remarkable milestones. Among these is the Repeal and Replacement of the Local Government Act in 2024, which introduced a more robust legal framework for Local Governance.

“For the first time since the Act’s inception in 1996, stipendiary allowances for dedicated practitioners were increased, and stipends for local board members, including the Town Planning Board, were introduced. Additionally, Councils now have the authority to raise and manage funds for maintaining public facilities—ushering in a new era of enhanced autonomy for Local Government entities.”

He said another noteworthy achievement is the relaunch of the Local Government Junior Council program—a forward-thinking initiative that invests in our youth. This program ensures a succession plan, equipping younger generations to lead with purpose.

The Minister said, “As we celebrate these accomplishments, we must also look toward the future. Governance is an ever-evolving journey that demands innovation and adaptability.”

He added, “By aligning local initiatives with national goals, we can advance progress for all. Strengthening Local Government mechanisms, addressing challenges head-on, and refining our systems will ensure that we meet the expectations of Family Island communities.”
