Transforming Prisons To Correctional Facilities

Bahamian Media News:

A three day workshop on transforming prisons into correctional facilities is being hosted by Prison Fellowship International in the capital this week.

Minister of National Security, the Hon. Wayne Munroe addressed attendees who hail from twenty countries across Latin America and the Caribbean. He said, “we declare that there’s a five pillar approach to crime. Prevention being the first and rehabilitation being the last, there’s punishment in there. But we like to focus on prevention and rehabilitation and prison fellowship plays a part in both of those in our facility.”

In his presentation to the group Bahamas Department of Correctional Services Commissioner, Doan Cleare said the prison is in need of fire revival to change the hearts and minds in the institution.

President of Prison Fellowship International Andrew Corley spoke with reporters on the sidelines of the event about the workshops objective. “Recidivism is the outcome but of course there are many things that actually play into a recidivism rate. So what we need to do is connect the dots there and ensure that when men and women are inside that we are using that time on their behalf and we are using it productively.”

The workshop is being held at the Courtyard Marriot, it ends June 4th.
