Minister Of Labour Update On Norman’s Cay Issues

Bahamian Media News:

Claims of labour and immigration violations have recently been made about a development on Norman’s Cay that have sparked an investigation by the government.

Minister for Labour and the Public Service, the Hon. Pia Glover-Rolle commented on the issue while attending the Bahamas Business and Investment Forum in New York City. She said, “we’re looking to ensure that we protect worker across our country in particular on those remote cays where there’s the thought that they’re so far away that nobody’s watching. Well the Bahamas Department of Labour and the Bahamas immigration department we are watching.”

The allegations which were made by past and present employees were deemed the worse of the worse by Director of Labour, Howard Thompson.

According to the minister some of the work permits for foreigners working at the development have been rescinded. “I think that we’ve come to a place where there’s the concept or the belief that no one’s watching or there’s no consequence for our actions well in this new day there are consequences. And we have in the Bahamas Department of Labour and immigration revoked many expatriate worker permits in the last few years and that will continue.”

Glover-Rolle said that investors coming into the country to assist in national development should do so with respect for Bahamian workers and laws.

Official at the Norman’s Cay Development have denied the allegations levied against them and have committed to cooperating with the government’s investigation.
