A teenaged girl on the island of Grand Bahama has been accused of renting a car with a fraudulent driver’s license.
Police Press Liaison Officer Superintendent Stephen Rolle told ZNS News two juveniles are in custody assisting with their investigation into the matter.
A photo of the license bearing the photo of the teen, said to be a student at Eight Mile Rock High School, was widely circulated on social media. Commentors expressed concern that the teen could have hurt someone or herself behind the wheel of the car.
Deputy Controller of Road Traffic, Kevin Mortimer said the license was not issued by his office. He informed of the legal consequences for someone using a fraudulent license. “Any person who forges or fraudulently uses or allows a person to use a license or to drive a motor vehicle shall be guilty of an offence an liable on summary conviction to a fine of not less than $200 or not exceeding $800 or imprisonment for a term of six months.
Mortimer acknowledged that the license was real but had been tampered with. He said, “our investigations reveal from our system where that is a driver’s license of a person, a valid driver’s license. However, the photograph on that driver’s license is not the person who is on the photograph that has been circulating.”
The Road Traffic Deputy Controller said valid documents most be presented before a driver’s licenses are processed and issued.
