The Ministry of Agriculture and Marine Resources officially opened a comprehensive agriculture training programme this week, signaling the beginning of a new era in Bahamian farming. With the support of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China and the Caribbean Agricultural Research and Development Institute (CARDI), the initiative brings together local farmers, agri-professionals, and international experts to introduce advanced agricultural practices and foster greater food security across the nation.
Held under the theme of transformation and innovation, the opening ceremony was led by the Department of Agriculture, the Hon. Jomo Campbell, who emphasized the importance of equipping Bahamians with the tools to revolutionize food production in the country.
“Today, we gather with purpose, with vision, and with hope. This event is not just the opening of a training programme. It is the beginning of transformation—of how we grow our food, how we see our land, and how we as a nation shape our future,” said Minister Campbell.
Over the course of the training, participants will explore a wide range of vital topics including advanced livestock management, climate-smart farming, high-end tomato production, greenhouse watermelon cultivation, grafting techniques, backyard farming strategies, liquid organic fertilizer manufacturing, and nitrogen fixation.
“These are not simply techniques—they are tools of empowerment,” Minister Campbell continued. “They are the building blocks of a new, resilient agricultural movement in The Bahamas.”
Minister Campbell expressed sincere gratitude to the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China and CARDI for their ongoing commitment to agriculture in The Bahamas. He noted that this collaboration reflects not just diplomatic cooperation but a deeply personal investment in the country’s agricultural future. The programme features technical guidance from the Hunan Lin Shi Group—international leaders in sustainable agriculture and agro-technological
development—who have implemented successful large-scale projects across Asia and Africa.
Chinese Ambassador to The Bahamas Yan Jiarong said, “Agriculture has always been one of the highlights in China and the Bahamas’ bilateral relationship. So, we’re grateful for the strong support of the ministry in this regard.”
Director of Agriculture Dr. Jason Sands, during brief remarks said, “This workshop is the way forward. This is how we build resilience. This how we continue to improve our food security.”
The Minister also encouraged all participants to fully engage in the training, learn with intention, and take their new knowledge back to their farms and communities to inspire others.
“Together, with the support of friends like CARDI, the Chinese Embassy and the Hunan Lin Shi Group, we are planting the seeds for a new era of agriculture in The Bahamas—one defined by sustainability, innovation, and national pride,” he said.
