Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Sen. Hon. Ryan Pinder provided an update on the work of the Parliamentary Human Rights Committee during his contribution to the 2025-2026 budget in the senate last week.
Pinder said, “since its appointment the committee has held consultations with over 30 stakeholders, over 30 separate stakeholders in our country, inclusive of government agencies, civil society organizations whose insights have assisted in the identification of urgent areas of reform. The committee has began review key legislations to examine and address human right deficiencies in our country. “
The committee is also exploring the protection and care of the elderly. He said, “the focus of the committee is on translating this early work into meaningful and lasting change. The committee will propose legislative reform supporting the establishment of the Department of Gender and Family Affairs and advising a national identification card system to improve access to public services. Their going to advocate for inclusive policies and infrastructure with particular focus on persons with disabilities and those living within the family islands.”
The committee was established in January with a view to strengthen human rights across the country.
