Minister of National Security, the Hon. Wayne Munroe delivered a national statement on immigration on Sunday afternoon. This came after leader of the Free National Movement (FNM) and Leader of the Opposition, the Hon. Michael Pintard held a press conference earlier the same day to address what he called an immigration crisis.
During his remarks Munroe revealed the Davis administration has repatriated 13,000 people in under four years. “This achievement represents operational decisions, boots on the ground and the coordinated enforcement from the Department of Immigration, the Royal Bahamas Defence Force and our international partners. These repatriations have reduce the migrant population in the detection center to just 50 people and that is a historic low,” he said.
The Minister said the press event held by the FNM was filled with distortions and spin. He also refuted FNM claims of an increase in foreign labour in the country. He said, “no foreign national enters The Bahamas from Haiti without an approved visa. They must have a return ticket and they must show proof of funds. We know when they arrive and we know when they leave. The system is stronger than it has ever been although we know that is not the same as saying there are no challenges. We continue to invest millions to better it.”
