Nassau, The Bahamas August 7, 2025 – BTC has ushered in a new digital era, with a groundbreaking milestone – Grand Bahama is now 100% “fiberized” with over 23,500 homes passed and ready to receive ultra-fast, high-capacity internet service. The nation’s second city now leads the way in digital transformation in The Bahamas, positioning itself as the flagship for connectivity, innovation, and economic resilience.
During a press conference held at the Pelican Bay resort, BTC CEO, Sameer Bhatti declared the achievement as a “Blue Letter Day” for the company, the island, and the country. The date is particularly significant as it approaches the anniversary of Hurricane Dorian, which devastated Grand Bahama and caused significant damage to BTC’s infrastructure and network.
“Today is a proud and historic day for BTC, particularly our Grand Bahama team, and most importantly our customers,” said Bhatti. We’ve not only rebuilt our network in Grand Bahama, but we’ve also reimagined the future. Grand Bahama is no longer just restored; it’s now the national leader in digital infrastructure. We’ve reached our goal of fully fiberizing the island to deliver a faster, more reliable, and more valuable user experience for residents and commercial customers.”
Bhatti noted that digital transformation is happening at the speed of light and is experienced in very different ways by our generations. “Technology is no longer just a tool, rather an engine that shapes every facet of Bahamian life,” he continued.
Dominic Petty, BTC’s Executive Senior Manager for the Northern Bahamas emphasized the transformational impact on residents and businesses: “Fiber is a game changer. The unmatched speed, reliability, and future ready capabilities means residents can now truly thrive in a digital first world. This network lays the foundation for Grand Bahama to become the nation’s first Smart City. We want Grand Bahamians to know that BTC is committed to delivering exceptional connectivity and value.”
Petty also commended the dedication and hard work of BTC’s Grand Bahama team for making the vision of fully fiberizing the island a reality. “Despite challenges, we steered the course,” Petty said. “This milestone not only benefits current users but paves the way for future innovation and services.”
Last year, BTC took a bold step in decommissioning its legacy copper services signaling the end of the “plain old telephone services” era and the complete transition to fiber. Grand Bahama is now fully fiberized and can leverage digital technology to connect, protect, and enhance the lives of residents.
BTC began its national fiber rollout in 2016, starting with New Providence. Since then, the company has brought fiber connectivity to parts of Exuma, Abaco, San Salvador, Rum Cay, Long Island, Cat Island, and now fully to Grand Bahama.
As BTC continues its mission to revolutionize The Bahamas’ digital landscape, the company remains focused on connecting communities, enhancing service quality, and enabling future focused innovation.
We connect. We. Care. We Commit.
