Minister of Labour and the Public Service, the Hon. Pia Glover-Rolle gave an update on labour issues in the country over the weekend, specifically the use of foreign labour and the training of Bahamians.
While hosting the back to school event in her constituency, Glover Rolle told ZNS News the government is ensuring that Bahamians are prepared for the future. She said, “our focus is Bahamian workers. We’re doing what we can to ensure that where they’re are gaps. Where companies or organizations are saying there’s no Bahamian available that’s skilled, we are identifying those gaps and designing programs, designing the solutions to ensure that we’re training Bahamian workers.”
The minister also spoke about the fields that require more Bahamians. “The construction industry that’s booming. We’re looking into health and allied services. We’re also going to look into tourism and hospitality and we’re gonna expand as required based on the gaps that are identified in the labour market. This means that where we are seeing an influx of requests for foreign labours, we’re looking to design programs whether its through BTVI, through the National Apprenticeship Program, through the National Youth Guard, through BAIC and BAMSI to ensure that we are now honing into those gaps areas and training and attracting Bahamians”
