Unions March To Parliament

Unions March To Parliament

Bahamian Media News:

Members of the Bahamas Public Services Union (BPSU) and the Bahamas Union of Teachers (BUT) marched from the old City Market property on Market Street to Bay Street on Wednesday where they staged a protest in front of the House Of Assembly.

Among their grievances we the non-payment of monies owed to civil servants. Family Consumer Science Teacher, Kharisma Munroe express they view the public servants are tired fighting for what is rightfully theirs. She said, “the Prime Minister and the minister of public service made an announcement saying that there would be salary increases straight across the board for the public service. We were expecting those payments in September, then the government issued another statement saying that some payments would be made in December. Public service minister, Pia Glover-Rolle then mentioned that it would not include teachers and it would not include nurses. I take grave exception to that.”

BPSU President, Kimsley Ferguson told reporters the union wants to send a message to the Prime Minister that Financial Secretary, Simon Wilson was not elected Prime Minister. He said, “we elected Philip Brave Davis as the Prime Minister. We’re appealing to him, do you job sir.”

Also on hand was BUT President, Belinda Wilson who called for clarity on whether teachers would be included in the salary increase exercise. “The Prime Minister has instructed them to give me certain documentation, the salary review report, the points from the conclusion of Cabinet, the list of my members that are going to be paid, how much they are going to be paid and in which category.”

Union officials have promised to return to Rawson Square should a favorable solution not be reached.
