University of The Bahamas Preparing for Major Milestone in International Accreditation Journey

Bahamian Media News:

Focused on continuous improvement throughout its academic affairs, student services, and operations, University of The Bahamas (UB) is preparing for a significant milestone in its road to international accreditation.

UB President Dr. Robert Blaine, III, has announced that a Candidacy Committee appointed by international accreditation body, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) will visit the university during the week of November 10th, 2025. The date has historic significance as November 10th is the university’s charter anniversary, a moment of both celebration and reflection.

“This upcoming site visit is a significant milestone in our journey toward international accreditation,” said Dr. Blaine. “It also serves as a powerful affirmation of the hard and crucial work that our university community has done over many years. It reflects our collective belief in what UB stands for: knowledge, truth, integrity, and a shared commitment to transforming lives through higher learning.”

Dr. Blaine broke the news on Wednesday to faculty, students, and staff at UB Oakes Field and UB North during a special called meeting.

A SACSCOC accreditation site visit is a critical part of the evaluation process. It helps to determine whether an institution meets the standards of quality and effectiveness required to become a candidate for accreditation. The visit is a review conducted by peers in academia who engage directly with faculty, staff, students, administrators, and trustees, give feedback and offer their professional insights. The team will visit both UB Oakes Field and UB North in Grand Bahama.

To guide preparations for the visit, Dr. Blaine has appointed the Accreditation Champions Working Group, comprising representatives from across the university.

“They will help us with logistics, host our guests, and ensure that every part of our university, from governance, teaching, and learning to student life and services are represented with confidence and pride,” he said. “As we prepare to welcome the SACSCOC team, let’s come together to show the strength of our community and the values that ground our purpose and impact on nation-building.”

From as far back as 2017, accreditation was affirmed as aspirational objective for UB with the establishment of the Office of Institutional Strengthening and Accreditation.

Dr. Blaine expressed heartfelt gratitude to faculty, staff, students, administrators, and trustees who have played vital roles over the years in preparing the university to reach this far in its transformational journey.

“From the bottom of my heart, thank you,” he said. “Thank you for every idea shared, every challenge solved, every pivot made, and every action taken. Each effort, large and small, has mattered.”
