A state recognized funeral service was held for His Grace the Most Reverend Drexel Gomez at Christ Church Cathedral on Thursday.
Governor General Her Excellency the Most Hon. Dame Cynthia Pratt was in attendance along with numerous government officials led by Prime Minister, the Hon. Philip Davis.
During his tribute to the late clergyman Mr. Davis spoke highly of the heart shown by Gomez. He said, “he understood that the church was not a monument to be admired but a living body meant to heal. He believed that theology must never become detached from compassion and that truth without love is incomplete.”
Senior Bishop of the Church in the Province of the West Indies, Rt. Rev. Philip Wright spoke highly of Gomez’s role in the Anglican church. “Archbishop Gomez served with distinction and unwavering faith leaving a profound impact on the church and all who had the privilege of knowing and working with him. Archbishop Gomez was deeply respected for his wisdom, humility and pastoral heart,” he said.
Gomez’s eldest son, former Parliamentarian and noted attorney, Damian Gomez also paid tribute to his father saying that he left the province better than he met it.
Following the funeral service the late Archbishop Gomez was buried at St. Agnes Anglican Church. He was 88 years old at the time of his death.
