ORG Bahamas Executive Chairman, Matt Aubry is continuing his advocation for electoral reform. He recently sat down with ZNS News where he spoke about some of the advances that have been made.
Aubry said, “the change that we just saw in the passing of the Data Protection Act by the House as well as some of the data privacy components and the parliamentary services change, those have all led up to showing some bits of reform to the electoral system here in The Bahamas.”
Though Aubry is in favor of the new biometric voters card regime, he expressed concern about its roll out. He said, “when we’re so close to an election it creates a lot of gaps in knowledge and understanding of what that means. There’s gonna be concern about the new document that folks will be utilizing, what’s the implications of that and what the recommendations and research are is to take time.”
The ORG Bahamas Chairman emphasized the importance of transparency in campaign financing. Aubry said, “It creates a level of transparency that results in more trust in the system that facilitates people believing they want to participate in something more.”
Turnout at the last general election was 65%. The next general election is expected to be held in 2026.
