BNU Slams Nurses Suspension

Bahamian Media News:

The Bahamas Nurses Union President has expressed opposition to the suspension of veteran nurse, Pearline Williams, following the release of a viral video showing structural issues at the Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH).

Muriel Lightbourne met with members of the media on Monday where she explained the circumstances of Williams’ suspension.

According to Lightbourne Williams was told she would need union representation at a meeting with the Principal Nursing Officer. A subsequent meeting was held with the Principal Nursing Officer, Human Resource Director and a senior union officer where the terms of her suspension were made clear.

After Williams suspension was made public Minister of Health and Wellness, the Hon. Dr. Michael Darville released a statement disagreeing with the course of action taken. This position was also taken by former minister of health, Dr. Duane Sands. Lightbourne said, “when I hear the former minister of health speaks to this matter as if this is something new it baffles me.”

The union president continued saying, “I have been dealing with the minister for the past couple of months for nurses in the Ministry of Health in the Department of Health that was suspended unconstitutionally and he has said nothing.”

Williams is expected back at work on November 14th.
