PM Davis & DPM Cooper Meet Fire Victims

Bahamian Media News:

Business owners impacted by a fire that destroyed several structures on Arawak Cay on Sunday met with the Prime Minister and other government officials on Monday at the Office of the Prime Minister.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism, Investments and Aviation, the Hon. Chester Cooper was at the meeting. He told ZNS News there has been no decision made on the type of assistance that will be offered by the government.

Minister responsible for Arawak Cay, the Hon. Jomo Campbell said the government has temporary and long term plans for the tourist hub. He said, “they were shown plans today as to what that could look like. What it would mean for some of the vendors. It was just something for them to digest and to take it, to determine how they would want to move forward.”

Minister Campbell, who will lead rebuilding efforts, said the government wants to ensure that something happens for the Arawak Cay vendors at least within the next sixty days.

Goldie’s Restaurant Manager, Kenya Mitchell attended the meeting. According to Mitchell she was encouraged by what she heard from the Prime Minister. “What we discussed with them is that a more sound structure versus using wood, maybe different type of materials, steel roofs and stuff like that. So we spoke about the building codes and everything.”

A clean up exercise has commenced at the site to remove debris.
