Calls have been made for the removal of Golden Isles Returning Officer, Neil Campbell after the chaotic scene that unfolded at the advanced poll on Monday.
After the votes were taken, representatives of the Free National Movement and Coalition Of Independents were concerned about how the ballot boxes would be transferred to a secure location. They went as far as blocking the entrance of Remnant Tabernacle of Praise where the early vote was held citing that there were no candidate representatives in the vehicle carrying the ballots.
Minister of National Security, the Hon. Wayne Munroe has responsibility for elections. He told reporters on Wednesday that the government does not question the political allegiance of people. He said, “public servants are free to hold political views but not to demonstrate them and everyone is free to vote for whoever they wish.”
The Minister went on to say that if there is evidence that Campbell has transgressed it should be presented. “This behavior that they have of about trafficking in gossip and rumors is a low form of advocacy, is a low form of dealing. It does not respect people’s names and reputations,” Munroe said.
FNM National Chairman, Dr. Duane Sands echoed calls for Campbell’s removal on Wednesday. He said, “somebody who has served in the capacity as a general for the Prime Minister ought not be the returning officer. Democracy need not only be done transparency, fairness, but it needs to be seen to be done. And if there are questions being raised about the integrity of the process that let’s do whatever we can to protect it.”
Campbell was present at a press conference hosted by Parliamentary Commissioner, Harrison Thompson on Tuesday where the advance poll incident was discussed. In his explanation on the matter Campbell revealed that FNM Leader, the Hon. Michael Pintard is his cousin, FNM Golden Isles candidate, Brian Brown is very close to his mother and he also has a close relationship with Prime Minister, the Hon. Philip Davis.
