Public Servants Receive Salary Increases

Bahamian Media News:

Public service workers received promised salary increases on Wednesday based on a recent salary review exercise.

The announce was made by Minister of Economic Affairs, Sen. Hon. Michael Halkitis while he was being interviewed on Wednesday. He said, “he was done in two parts middle managers first and line staff. And so they have been paid today and this is money that is added to their salary not just a lump sum. So going forward that is an amount that is added to the salary. Of course we’d always like to do more and as we get in a better position financially we will do more.”

The payments were initially set to be made in September. After that date passed union members staged a protest in Rawson Square back in October demanding their money. This action was led by Bahamas Public Services Union President, Kimsley Ferguson along with Bahamas Union of Teachers President, Belinda Wilson.

Ferguson told ZNS News, “some persons said that they got $166, some said that they got $233. Some also indicate that they got $225, I guess as a retroactive payment.”

According to Belinda Wilson some workers reported not receiving a payment at all. She said, “since we are still awaiting a written response to our letter delivered by, Kimsley Ferguson, President of the Bahamas Public Service Union and Belinda Wilson, President of the Bahamas Union of Teachers, to the Prime Minister on October 15th, 2025, we are unsure as to how they arrived at these amounts.”

According to Minister Halkitis the government will continue to conduct salary reviews and improve salaries and benefits as they are able to do so.
