he company’s origins trace back to Nick Damianos Sr., a descendant of the Greek community that played a pivotal role in building The Bahamas’ historic sponge trade. Shortly after the opening of Oakes Field, the nation’s first airport, Mr. Nick — as he was affectionately known — recognized a turning point. He saw the beginnings of a new era driven by tourism, international visitors, and real estate investment.
Already established in other local enterprises, Mr. Nick founded Damianos Realty in 1945 with a single office on Frederick Street and a small staff that included his longtime associate, Al Deleveaux. His commitment to integrity, meaningful relationships, and principled business practices quickly earned him the trust of Nassau’s growing community.
“Wherever my father went, he was greeted as a familiar face — he had an extraordinary ability to connect with people and a natural charisma that left a lasting impression,” reflects his son, George Damianos, the company’s Chief Executive Officer. “He always believed that trust and reputation were the cornerstones of success, and that philosophy continues to guide us today.”
In 1970, the company’s offices were relocated to a larger premises on Shirley Street, where the firm operated until moving into its new headquarters in the Windsor Business Park in 2021. Throughout expansion, the company’s culture remained deeply rooted in its family origins. “Our family’s daily involvement and commitment set the tone,” says George. “It fostered a culture of collaboration, professionalism, and a shared sense of responsibility that continues to define us.”
The Third Generation: Global Vision, Local Heart
The early 2000s also brought the next generation into the fold. Lana Rademaker, Virginia’s daughter, and Nick Damianos, George’s son, joined the company, helping to usher in modernization and expansion across the islands.
During this same period, the company continued to strengthen its position in the luxury sector. A key milestone came in 2002, when Damianos Realty acquired Lyford Cay Real Estate Company, the only brokerage firm located within the private, gated community of Lyford Cay. The acquisition reflected a strategic alignment with the firm’s long-term vision — expanding its reach in the high-end market and meeting the needs of the company’s increasingly global clientele. This integration laid the foundation for what would ultimately become Lyford Cay Sotheby’s International Realty and fortified the company’s presence in one of the country’s most coveted enclaves.
In 2005, after six decades of independent success, Damianos Realty became the exclusive Sotheby’s International Realty® affiliate for The Bahamas, adopting the name Damianos Sotheby’s International Realty.
“The decision to purchase the master franchise for Sotheby’s International Realty® was not taken lightly,” says Damianos. “However, we recognized the opportunity to align with a brand that shares our commitment and values, while also providing the international reach, tools, and technology needed to expand and elevate our business.”
This partnership enhanced the company’s international profile and ushered in a period of sustained dynamic growth. Over the next two decades, Damianos Sotheby’s International Realty expanded its presence to nine offices across The Bahamas, including Lyford Cay, Baha Mar, Eleuthera, Harbour Island and Abaco.
