Lyford Cay International School Hosts 3rd Annual Day of Service in Memory of Dr David Mindorff

Bahamian Media News:

Lyford Cay International School (LCIS) invited members of its community to take part in a special Day of Service on Saturday, 21 March, held in memory of the school’s former Principal, Dr David Mindorff.

Organised by GGYA Coordinator & Chair of Humanities Mr Joshua Purcell, the event took place across both LCIS campuses and brought together students, families, alumni, and friends of the school to participate in meaningful volunteer projects. Activities included working in the school gardens and along the nature trail, continuing a tradition of service that reflects Dr Mindorff’s deep commitment to community engagement and environmental stewardship.

The event concluded with the official launch of the school’s new Outdoor Learning Space, an initiative designed to expand hands-on, nature-based learning opportunities for students. The project has been supported through a grant, secured by Dr Mindorff, from the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Small Grants Programme (SGP), implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

Special guests in attendance included Mr Deon Stewart, Senior National Coordinator for the United Nations Development Programme GEF Small Grants Programme, and Dr Lesvie Archer, Senior Programme Assistant for the programme. Mr Stewart gave brief remarks, commending those who worked with the GEF SGP on the outdoor classroom project. He also welcomed the possibility of new collaborations that would further benefit LCIS and the larger Bahamian community.

LCIS established the Day of Service to honour the legacy of Dr. Mindorff, who led the school with a strong belief in authentic service and the responsibility to make a positive difference in the world. In previous years, the school community has carried out projects both on campus and across The Bahamas, including garden revitalisation, trail restoration, community clean-ups, and partnerships with local charitable organisations. Through this annual tradition, LCIS continues to celebrate Dr. Mindorff’s enduring impact by inspiring students and community members to work together to leave the world better than they found it.
