Min. Bell discusses home and land ownership

Bahamian Media News:

“The Bahamian dream has always been about more than employment. It has always been about ownership, the opportunity to own a home, to own land and to build something that can be passed from one generation to the next,” said the Hon. Keith Bell Minister of Housing and Land Reform while making his contribution to the 2026/2027 budget recently.

This is why the Prime Minister took the deliberate decision to establish the Ministry of Housing and Land Reform. That decision reflects a simple but powerful truth, ‘housing and land are not separate issues. They are inextricably linked.’

Before a house can be built land must be acquired. Before wealth can be transferred, title must be secured, Minister Bell said. Before a family can build a future, it must have a foundation upon which to build.

“The inclusion of Land Reform within this Ministry therefore recognizes that the work is not simply about constructing houses. It is about expanding ownership, resolving longstanding land issues, increasing access to opportunity and ensuring that more Bahamians are able to secure a meaningful stake in their country’s future.”

At its core, said Minister Bell, the work of this Ministry is about ownership. The opportunity to own a home. The opportunity to own land. The opportunity to create something that can be passed from one generation to the next. “That remains one of the most powerful pathways to security, dignity and economic advancement available to ordinary Bahamians.”

For generations, home ownership and land ownership have formed part of the Bahamian dream. They represent more than blocks and mortar. They represent security, stability, independence and the opportunity to create something that can be passed from one generation to the next. They are often the foundation upon which families build wealth, strengthen communities and secure a better future for their children.

The mandate of the Ministry extends beyond the construction of homes. It includes improving access to housing, strengthening security of tenure, advancing title regularization initiatives, supporting land adjudication and registration programmes, addressing longstanding land issues and expanding opportunities for Bahamians to participate more fully in the ownership of their country’s future, said Minister Bell.
