Independence, not a static moment frozen in 1973 but an active, living assignment, says Minister Moxey at Flag Day ceremonies

Bahamian Media News:

During the month of July, a series of events leading up to and surrounding the country’s 53rd Independence Day celebrations on July 10 officially began with a Flag Raising Ceremony on July 1 on the Harold DeGregory Complex Lawn.

The ceremony featured musical performances by the Urban Renewal Marching Band and a cultural dance performance by The Bahamas Dance Theatre.

As the nation celebrates its 53rd anniversary of independence under the theme, “Celebrating our Heritage, Shaping our Tomorrow,” Bahamians pause to reflect on the journey that has brought us to this moment since gaining independence in 1973.

Minister for Grand Bahama, Hon. Ginger Moxey, in her address, noted, “Fifty-three years ago, a new flag rose into the Bahamian sky, and a sovereign nation was born.”

Moxey emphasised that independence is not a static moment frozen in 1973 but an active, living assignment.

“It is a daily choice to build, to reach, and to conquer.  As Bahamians, we have made incredible strides.”

Minister Moxey pointed out that true independence demands that Bahamians reach for deeper growth as a people, create empowering opportunities and claim a higher standard of excellence.

“Let this 53rd anniversary serve as a profound renewal of our vows to this nation and to the soil of this island. When that flag catches the wind today, let it remind us that the sacred work of nation building continues to be entirely in our hands,” the minister said.

“Let us honour the Titans of 1973 by forging a future that stretches far beyond their wildest dreams.  Let us step out of the shadows and march forward into our greatness, standing shoulder to shoulder as one Bahamas, united and proud.”
