More Than a Crown: Celebrating Bahamian Culture Through Pageantry

Bahamian Media News:

Dreams became reality for two young contestants Friday night as they captured the coveted titles of Miss and Little Miss Independence, a signature event marking Bahamian Independence celebrations in North Abaco.

Miss Island Jewel, 16-year-old Gianna Roker, was crowned Miss Independence, while her younger co-winner, 10-year-old Sunland Baptist Academy student Laila Dorsett, captured the title of Little Miss Independence.

“I feel ecstatic about the win,” said Gianna Roker. “I’ve been in many pageants before…to work so hard and finally achieve my dream feels amazing.”

Seven contestants competed for the coveted titles, including Little Miss Ocean Pearl Walesia Brennen, Little Miss Sea Star Lakajah Baillou, and Little Miss Coral Reef Calyah McDonald. In the teen division, Miss Bahama Sunrise Aniyah McDonald was named first runner-up, while Miss Paradise Ziana Vilsaint placed second runner-up.

This year’s pageant marked the fourth edition of the hometown competition.

“This pageant was designed to ensure the youngest members of our community are actively learning about and participating in Bahamian culture,” said Stephen Wilson, North Abaco Administrator. “Everything from their talent to their costumes has to be Bahamian-inspired, so it has been amazing to see all the creative ideas they come up with.”

Participants competed for individual awards in the talent, costume, and evening wear categories while showcasing their creativity and cultural pride. Both titleholders received a $1,000 cash prize and a new laptop, while the first runners-up were awarded $500 cash prizes, underscoring that the event is not just a pageant but also an educational experience.

“I think the pageant allows the girls to learn not only about themselves but also about the country they are growing up in,” said Shantia Sands, mother of the newly crowned Little Miss Independence. “It was such a proud moment to see my daughter shine while representing our country.”

The event would not have been possible without the generous support of its sponsors, whose commitment to the community helped make the pageant possible for all Abaconians. The North Abaco Independence Festival Committee extends its heartfelt thanks to the North Abaco District Council, Green Turtle Cay Ferry, Terrace Bootle, and Monica McIntosh for their invaluable contributions and dedication to celebrating Bahamian heritage.
