Minister of Energy, Utilities and Aviation the Hon. JoBeth Coleby-Davis at New Providence Gas LNG Terminal Groundbreaking Ceremonies, July 13, 2026 Sun Oil headquarters, addressed the audience with the question, “Why LNG and why now?”
She then answered, “we have a moral obligation to be stewards of this environment” of pristine waters and clear skies. LNG is the ‘bridge fuel.’
“It is significantly cleaner than the fuels we have relied on for half a century. By transitioning to LNG, we are drastically reducing our carbon footprint. We are telling the world that The Bahamas is not just a victim of climate change, but a proactive leader in the global energy transition.”
The initiative, a collaboration between Shell North America, FOCOL Holdings Limited, and Bahamas Power and Light is not just about the environment, she said, it’s also about the economy.
“Energy is the lifeblood of a modern society. When energy is expensive, everything is expensive. When energy is unreliable, progress stalls. By integrating LNG into our energy mix, we are stabilizing our future. We are creating a system that is resilient, modern, and capable of supporting a growing economy that we are building.”
She said that as minister with responsibility for the energy, be assured the government’s goal is singular and unwavering: reliability and affordability.
“This LNG Terminal will help us to ensure that when you flip a switch, the light comes on — every time. It will ensure that our hotels, our hospitals, and our schools can operate without the fear of interruption.
“More importantly, by moving to a more efficient, stable fuel source like LNG [liquified natural gas], we are creating the pathway to lower electricity bills. This is not a ‘maybe.’ This is the plan. We are decoupling our fate from the wild swings of the global oil market and anchoring it in a stable, modern infrastructure. We are putting money back into the pockets of the Bahamian people.”
Minister Coleby-Davis said that in addition to the energy impact of this project, the development of the LNG Terminal will also be an engine of growth.
“As this project moves forward, scores of jobs will be created through construction and in the long term in engineering and operations. When we invest in energy infrastructure, we aren’t just building a terminal; we are building an ecosystem.
“Reliable, affordable energy attracts other industries; therefore, we are creating the conditions for additional private investment that will generate a ripple effect of opportunity for generations to come.”
Moving towards the groundbreaking activities, she added: “As we prepare to lift our shovels for this groundbreaking, I ask all Bahamians to remember what this moment represents.
“It represents security — knowing we have the fuel we need.
“It represents affordability — a government committed to easing the burden on your family.
“It represents opportunity — jobs and growth for our people.
“And it represents vision — a step toward a cleaner, brighter energy future.”
