Prime Minister, the Hon. Philip Davis along with other government, Bahamas Power and Light and Bahamas Grid Company officials toured the Blue Hills Power Plant on Thursday. This came after an island-wide blackout occurred in New Providence. The cause of the outage was attributed to an electrical fault that cause an explosion which damaged one of the transformers at the plant.

Mr. Davis told reporters, “it is incidents like this that demonstrate what we have inherited and we are fixing it. It’s not a complaint by us. It is just that we have to fix what we are.”

The Prime Minister also spoke to the progress being made in repairing and rebuilding the system. He pointed to the transmission and distribution that is complete and now in the testing phase, new on-site substations and the construction of a utility-scale solar field scheduled to be connected shortly. The solar panels will provide 20 megawatts of power with battery power.

Mr. Davis appealed to the public to exercise patience saying, “I’m frustrated as well but there will be growing pains to get to where we need to be because of what we inherited.”

At the time of the tour power officials were hopeful to have all customers back online within eight to ten hours.
