The Bahamas National Breastfeeding Association (BNBA), in partnership with the Ministry of Health & Wellness, concluded its observance of World Breastfeeding Week 2026, celebrating another successful week of education, advocacy and community engagement aimed at promoting breastfeeding across The Bahamas.
Observed annually from August 1-7, this year’s international theme, “Breastfeeding for a Sustainable Start in Life: Strengthen What Works,” highlighted the importance of protecting, promoting and supporting breastfeeding while ensuring mothers receive the encouragement and practical assistance they need to succeed.
Throughout the week, healthcare professionals, volunteers and breastfeeding advocates participated in a series of activities, including educational displays at health clinics, media interviews, newspaper features and community outreach initiatives designed to raise awareness of the lifelong health benefits of breastfeeding for both mothers and babies.
The observance concluded with The Big Latch On at Mall at Marathon, where breastfeeding mothers and their families joined the global movement in a public show of support for breastfeeding while connecting with healthcare professionals and experienced mothers.
One of the week’s highlights was the World Breastfeeding Week Educational Exhibit Competition, which showcased informative and creative displays from health clinics across the country. Annes TownClinic earned the national title for its outstanding exhibit, demonstrating excellence in educating the public on the importance and benefits of breastfeeding. Anne’s Town Clinic displayed nutrition during pregnancy. The second place winner was the Lower Bogue Clinic in Eleuthera, which displayed family planning themes. Third place was the South Beach Health Center, which focused on infant safety. Judges were Jennifer Pearce, Ampusam Symonette and Melissa Colebrook.
BNBA President and Registered Nurse Trineka McCardy thanked the Ministry of Health & Wellness, healthcare professionals, volunteers, community partners and participating families for helping to make the week’s activities a success.
She said the association remains committed to supporting mothers through education, encouragement and advocacy while working to ensure that every child has the healthiest possible start in life.
The Bahamas National Breastfeeding Association encourages expectant parents and new mothers to seek breastfeeding support early and to take advantage of the many resources available through healthcare providers and the association.
