A sea of brightly decorated umbrellas transformed the streets of Carmichael into a colorful celebration of breastfeeding as the Bahamas National Breastfeeding Association (BNBA) hosted another successful Annual Umbrellathon in honour of the late Nurse Carlotta Klass, a pioneering advocate for maternal and child health in The Bahamas.
Led by BNBA President Trineka McCardy, participants proudly displayed creatively designed umbrellas promoting breastfeeding as the gold standard for infant nutrition while raising awareness of its lifelong benefits for mothers and babies.
Prior to the the awareness walk, judges Shevonne Brennen, Sherry Benjamin, and Richard Symonette carefully evaluated the entries.
“We are indeed grateful for your sense of social responsibility and for stepping in to assist,” the association said in thanking the judges. “Your service is appreciated as part of our nation-building efforts.”
The winners of this year’s Umbrellathon competition were:
- 1st Place: Flamingo Gardens Clinic
- 2nd Place: PMH Maternity Ward
- 3rd Place: Adolescent Health Clinic
- 4th Place: Melissa and Amber Colebrooke
Also participating in the event were BNBA Vice President Linelle Thompson, whose umbrella highlighted breastfeeding as the gold standard for babies, along with Dr. Lillian Jones, Dr. Calae Philippe, Nurse Midwife Anna Forbes, and Gabrielle Munnings, all joining the association in promoting breastfeeding and healthier beginnings for Bahamian children.
The annual Umbrellathon remains one of BNBA’s signature awareness initiatives, combining creativity, community participation and public education while celebrating the enduring legacy of Nurse Carlotta Klass. As participants walked through the streets of Carmichael with their colourful breastfeeding-themed umbrellas, they delivered a simple but powerful message: breastfeeding gives every baby the healthiest possible start in life while helping to build stronger families and a healthier Bahamas.
