Press Club Mourns the Passing of Noted Journalist Steve McKinney

Bahamian Media News:

The Bahamas Press Club 2014 mourns the passing of Steve McKinney, an outstanding journalist and a founding member of the first Press Club in 1996.

He was 64 years old, having been born in the historic Chippingham community to Louise Sands and William McKinney.

The Bahamas has lost one of its foremost advocates for free speech, public access to information and a champion for the downtrodden.

Stephen Arthur McKinney knew from an early age what he wanted to do with his life and pursued it with a passion. After attending Aquinas College, he began his professional career as a cub reporter with The Tribune at the tender age of 17.

From Reporter to Sports Editor, to Deputy Director and eventually News Director, he climbed the ranks at ZNS, the National Broadcaster.

Steve would serve as Press Attaché to Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham and a Deputy Director at Bahamas Information Services, where he created BIS Broadcasting. He would also establish The Sports Journalist’s Association, The Bahamas Press Club and also become the first Police Spokesman.

While his voice may be silent, his accomplishments and the standards he set and championed as a journalist throughout his career and finally through his award-winning show, Hard Copy, will live on.
ON behalf of The Bahamas Press Club, we send our deepest condolences to his wife Treva, son Stevie Jr., daughter Stefka, granddaughter Nala, and all the other members of his family.
