Press Statement
It is very disappointing to see today’s disruption to public transportation, particularly when we consider the many Bahamians who depend on bus services every day to get to work, school, and carry out their daily responsibilities.
I want the public to know that we have not ignored the concerns raised by bus owners and drivers. I have been in official communication with Mr. Harrison Moxey, President of the United Public Transportation Company (UPTC), whom we were made to understand represents the interests of both bus owners and drivers in these discussions.
A proposal was submitted to the Ministry, and we have already responded, with a meeting set to discuss the concerns raised and work through the details scheduled for this Friday at 1pm.
With that process already underway, today’s industrial action is particularly disappointing and does little to support the spirit of good-faith negotiations that we believe is necessary to reach a resolution.
I fully appreciate that those in the public transportation industry have concerns they wish to see addressed, and we remain willing to listen and work toward practical solutions. However, we must also consider the thousands of Bahamians who rely on these services and are now being inconvenienced.
I am reaching out directly to the leadership of the respective associations and unions in an effort to bring some immediate resolution to this situation.
Our priority is to restore normal public transportation services as quickly as possible while continuing meaningful discussions to address the concerns of the industry.
I encourage all parties to return to the table in good faith, with the understanding that the Bahamian people should not have to bear the burden while we work through these matters.
