Goombay Summer Festival On Cat Island

Prime Minister and Member of Parliament for Cat Island, Rum Cay and San Salvador, the Hon. Philip Davis attended the Cat Island Goombay Summer Festival over the weekend in New Bight, Cat Island.

Attendees enjoyed performances by local artists, the Royal Bahamas Police Force band and fire dancers as well as crafts, food and the crab catching and watermelon eating contents.

Ministry of Tourism Coordinator Denice Bethel spoke about the economic impact of the event to the island. “Vendors are all open and the display of the all the native foods everyone is happy and I know as the evening gets more darker more persons will be benefiting. This is the first evening for the cultural village for the year,” she said.

According to Island Administrator Kate Williamson local vendors look forward with anticipation for such events.

Prime Minister Davis who was accompanied by Minister of Economic Affairs, the Hon. Michael Halkitis addressed the crowd. He said, “the Goombay Festivals gives our local artist and entrepreneurs the opportunity to shine. What a wonderful showcase of our local talent, foods and crafts. Festivals and celebrating milestones such as our 50th anniversary are also a wonderful opportunity to make sure our culture and traditions are passed on to a younger generations. As you celebrate during this event know that as you eat, as you dance, as you laugh and as you sing you are playing a part in preserving a very special culture, boosting a local economy and investing in the future with more inclusive opportunities for all.”

This is the second consecutive year that the Goombay Summer Festival has been held in Cat Island.
