‘A summer job can lead to a great career opportunity’ – Minister Moxey reflects

Bahamian Media News:

Using her personal experience as an example, Minister for Grand Bahama, the Hon. Ginger Moxey told the first cohorts of young potential summer employees that she started out working at the Port Authority as a summer student and through hard work, dedication and the willingness to learn, she eventually worked her way to vice-president of the organization.

In her address to the hundreds of young Grand Bahamians taking part in the Ministry for Grand Bahama’s summer job program, during orientation at Freeport Bible Church July 2, 2025, Minister Moxey told the budding employees that she has always believed in the power of hard work and the importance of showing up ready to learn.

“Opportunities like this are structured programs designed to give young people like yourselves a real taste of the professional world,” said Minister Moxey. “We, as a government, aren’t just giving you a summer job. We’re making a profound investment in you. We’re planting a seed and nurturing it because we see in each of you the next generation of innovators, problem solvers, entrepreneurs, leaders and the very individuals who will build an even better, more prosperous and more vibrant Grand Bahama….

“I want to be very direct about why you’re here – you’re here to work. You’re also here to learn and yes, you’re absolutely here to earn your own money. But let me tell you, this program is about so much more than just earning a paycheck. It’s about building strong work habits that will last a lifetime. It’s about understanding the value of showing up on time, every time, ready to contribute. It’s about taking immense pride in what you do, no matter how big or small that task might be.

“This is where you learn discipline, that inner strength and commitment that will serve you well in every aspect of your lives, from your careers to your personal goals.”

Minister Moxey admonished the students to consider that every great achievement, every successful person they admire, every thriving business, were all built on a foundation of hard work and discipline.

With the Ministry of Grand Bahama’s summer job program, each participant will get the opportunity to lay the foundation of their future careers.  Such an opportunity, according to Minister Moxey, will give students the chance to experience what it means to be a part of a team, to contribute to something bigger than themselves and to see the direct results of their efforts.

Minister Moxey reminded the young Grand Bahamians of the many projects and developments taking place on Grand Bahama Island, adding that they all represent new opportunities for a new generation of young Grand Bahamians: “So, I want you all to prepare yourselves for these opportunities,” said Minister Moxey.

Minister for Grand Bahama, Ginger Moxey, took the time following her address to students of the Ministry for Grand Bahama’s Summer Job Program, to help distribute job letters for the hundreds of students who are a part of this year’s program.
