Tropical storm warnings were issued and shelters activated on islands in the northern Bahamas in preparation for the effects of the passing of Hurricane Milton.
Family Island Administrator for Central Abaco, Keffianne Ferguson gave ZNS News an update on Thursday of conditions on that island. She said, “during the night the wind picked up a bit. We had some intermittent rains and we still have some now. The skies were overcast earlier. We activated our shelter. One of the largest shelters here in Central Abaco, that’s at the Central Abaco Primary School, that was activated on Tuesday and last night we has twelve residents who registered. They left voluntarily by 9am this morning on, only two persons had remained. But there was no report of incidents or damages.”
Berry Islands Administrator, Dierdre Fox also reported minimal damage from the passing storm. She told ZNS News, “everything is okay. We did open the shelter and we have the ambulance parked there in the event of an incident but all in all we are pretty good right now. With the high winds and rough seas there won’t be any mailboat so the residents are making use of what’s in the stores presently.”
Managing Director of the Disaster Risk Management Authority, Aarone Sargeant appeared at a press briefing at the Office of the Prime Minister on Thursday where he give an update on DRM efforts. “We have since been able to be in contact with the administrator Ms. Evak Arthur through the use of a SAT phone. We are waiting from further update from her but there seems to be reports of minimal damage as well.”
