According to Police Press Liaison Officer, Superintendent Stephen Rolle the fires that have been raging on the island of Abaco have been contained. The volunteer firefighters were assisted by a crop duster plane that arrived over the weekend.
According to Superintendent Rolle twelve firefighters from New Providence and four from Grand Bahama also assisted in fighting the blaze. He told reporters on Monday, “we want to say thanks also to the Island Administrator, Mr. Pinder, who assisted with support with a water plane that came over and assisted greatly last night and into the wee hours of the morning causing the fire to now be under control. The fire now is still being monitored and they’re still on the ground assessing and areas that they see affected they’ll be back in those areas trying to extinguish the fire if it arises again.”
The fire in South Abaco has been contained and Marsh Harbour was impacted but there was no injuries reported. “Initially there were some wind factors that played a role inside this fire being spread widely. Like I said the plane was up in the air as well , it started again this morning with the water drops, so that assisted very greatly with the fires in Abaco district.”
Rolle further stated, “in The Bahamas…our partnership with US counterparts and so therefore we were able to reach out to them and they came over and assisted us. Like I said the island administrator organized all of this external support and I’m sure that we’ll continue to work together with the police force to make sure we get this fire under control very quickly.”
